When a diverse society is united

Collectively shaping a sustainable future – in a free, open and democratic society.

Liberal democracy is facing a multitude of challenges. Authoritarian tendencies, where governments increasingly concentrate power and limit the freedom of citizens, are on the rise. Factors such as disinformation also pose a threat, and independent journalism at both local and national levels is no longer guaranteed in many places. If citizens feel excluded from the political process and individuals refrain from engaging in dialogue, it can result in a loss of trust in democratic institutions and contribute to societal division.

Media and discourse competence, political education, formats for citizen participation and dialogue, independent journalism and safeguarding democratic values in the digital sphere can all play a significant role in addressing these challenges.
